Opening of a pop-up store with fair trade clothing in Luxembourg
Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg, in collaboration with Caritas Luxembourg, organised the "Rethink Your Clothes" campaign to raise awareness among the Luxembourg public about the issues surrounding the production and consumption of clothing. The campaign aimed not only to spark a debate on the environmental pollution caused by the textile industry (the second-largest polluter globally after the oil industry) but also to highlight human rights violations in this sector: extremely low wages, inhumane working hours, child labour, exposure to toxic chemicals, harassment, and repression of trade unions. Now that the campaign has ended, Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg intends to continue raising awareness of this still largely overlooked sector, with a particular focus on the supply of workwear in Luxembourg.
Focus of the peer group
It is crucial that not only companies but their entire production chains adhere to binding measures that respect both human and environmental rights. This peer group's in-depth analysis will aim to understand the current context and identify obstacles that prevent professionals from purchasing Fairtrade clothing.
Analysis
- Analysis of the workwear supply chain in Luxembourg
- Comparison of the conventional and Fairtrade sectors in terms of workwear
- Identifying the (external and internal) factors that discourage companies from sourcing Fairtrade workwear
- Development of arguments: What are the business arguments for a company to engage in responsible sourcing that respects human and environmental rights? What "interest" would a company have in procuring labeled clothing?
- Analyse existing legislation at the European level
- Analysis option: How can we ensure that the social aspect and human rights are also taken into account?
Proposed methodology
- SWOT analysis
- Mapping of Luxembourg by purchasing volume
- Interviews with various stakeholders
- Discussions with experts from NGOs, politics, science, and the textile industry
